Do-It-Yourself Exhibits

The mission of Do-It-Yourself exhibits is to provide information and tools to engage global communities and help the public understand the natural world and our place in it.

NMNH provides free, digitally delivered materials that allow venues to build their own exhibits.

Each Do-It-Yourself exhibit toolkit provides an array of materials for users, including but not limited to content panels, multimedia, and a resource guide.

DiY exhibits are available in English and bilingual English-and-Spanish. Some DiYs are offered in multiple languages.

To obtain access to a Do-it-Yourself exhibit toolkit, you must fill out an application for an available exhibit. Once submitted, processed, and approved, you will get an email with access instructions.  If you have any questions while filling out the application or about DiY exhibits in general, please email NMNH-ExhibitsDIY@si.edu .

What is a DiY exhibit?

A series of free, print-on-demand graphic panels based on current or former physical exhibits at NMNH. A DiY toolkit provides a variety of materials.

Are there requirements for hosting and displaying a DiY exhibit?

Venues are required to display the title panel and the first content panel. DiY toolkit materials may only be used for non-profit, educational purposes. Users are not allowed to alter pre-designed panels.

How much does an exhibit cost?

Cost estimates depend on location, materials, and scope of exhibition size. NMNH provides the files free of charge and in a flexible format to allow for a range of budgets, but the user is responsible for all printing costs.

Do I have to display the entire exhibit?

Venues can choose the size and number of panels to display. Beyond the required title panel and first content panel, each exhibit allows for flexibility dependent on location space, budget, and audiences. Venues can use digital displays but cannot display on the internet or virtually.

Can I customize a DiY exhibit?

Some DiY toolkits include customizable templates that allow venues to tell stories important to their communities. Users may not alter NMNH-designed and -locked panels. We encourage venues to customize the DiY exhibit in various ways that fit their audiences’ needs, including but not limited to adding collection items or public programming.

How do I set up a DiY exhibit?

Please fill out an application per individual DiY exhibit page. Once you receive access, you can download the files you chose to print. We recommend beginning with the resource guide for more details on printing and fabrication.
